George Sweeney is a native of Carbonear. He has a
wealth of experience in post-secondary education
having worked as an Electrical Instructor and Training
Coordinator with the community college system for 20
years.
George became executive
assistant to the Minister of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs in 1993 and has worked diligently on behalf of
the citizens of Carbonear - Harbour Grace until his
own election to politics in 1999.
George was first
elected on February 9, 1999, and served as Chair of
the Public Accounts Committee. On February 13, 2001,
he was named Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister
of Industry, Trade and Rural Development. On February
17, 2003, George was appointed Minister of Government
Services and Lands.
On October 21, 2003
George was elected to a second term as the MHA for
Carbonear-Harbour Grace district. He was named critic
for Government Services and Lands and Party Whip on
November 24, 2003.
George was Deputy
Governor of Zone 9 Kinsmen Club, Grand Knight of
McCarthy Council Knights of Columbus and Chairperson
of the Trinity-Conception Region Health Care Board
from 1989-1995. He was also a sitting member of the
Conception Bay North Folk Arts Council and past member
of the Board of Directors of the Conception Bay North
Community Centre.
George has developed a
personal relationship with his constituents and they
know they can depend on him. |
