Roger Grimes is a graduate
of Memorial University of Newfoundland with degrees in
Science (B.Sc.) And Education (B.Ed.), as well as a
Masters Degree in Education (M.Ed.).
Prior to becoming
involved in politics, Roger taught school in central
Newfoundland for 15 years. While teaching, he also
served as the President of the Newfoundland and
Labrador Teachers’ Association and as Director of the
Canadian Teachers Federation.
In the general election
of 1989, Roger was elected as the Member of the House
of Assembly for Exploits. He was appointed
Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier, a position he
held until 1991 when he became the Minister of
Employment and Labour Relations. Following the
election in 1993, Roger was re-appointed to Cabinet
and became Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation
in 1994. After the general election of 1996, Roger was
appointed Minister of Education. On December 15, 1998
he was appointed Minister of Mines and Energy. On
January 13, 2000 he was appointed Minister of Health
and Community Services. From February 13, 2001 until
November 5, 2003 he served as the 8th
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Upon successful
personal re-election in Exploits district, he is now
Leader of the Official Opposition.
Roger is well known in
Newfoundland and Labrador for his athletic prowess
having represented the province both provincially and
nationally in a number of sporting events.
He is still active in
recreational hockey, slo-pitch softball, and is an
avid golfer. |
