NEWFOUNDLAND
AND LABRADOR WOMEN'S LIBERAL
COMMISSION
President's Message
Welcome to the Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Liberal Commission (NLWLC)
website.
This site provides information about the NLWLC and its role within the
Liberal Party.
The NLWLC Executive Board members would like to encourage
women to become involved in Women’s Liberal Clubs throughout the province. We
invite Liberal MHA’s and MP’s to promote the formation of clubs in their areas.
By doing so, women have greater input into developing policy resolutions which
impact on the lives of women and their families. As well, provincial clubs have
representation at the Liberal Party of NL AGM’s and national clubs at the
Liberal Party of Canada Biennials.
Women wishing to join a Women’s Liberal Club, form a club, or
access further information are invited to contact the NLWLC.
We encourage women to consider seeking election as Liberals
to the House of Assembly and/or the House of Commons. The representation of
women at both levels is far below where we should be in the 21st
century. In the last provincial election, Anna Thistle, Judy Foote, and Yvonne
Jones, were re-elected to the House of Assembly and continue to be a strong
Liberal voice for the interests of this province. We are also pleased to have a
woman, who spent many years volunteering for our provincial Party, appointed to
the Senate of Canada. Senator Joan Cook has represented the province on several
Standing Committees and presently serves as Senate Whip for the Liberal
Opposition.
While women play an important role during provincial and
federal elections we would like to see more women seeking election to the
Women’s Liberal Commission, District and Federal Riding Associations, and the
Executive Board of the Party.
Within the Liberal Party of NL, we seek equal representation
of women on Standing and Ad Hoc Committees. Any woman wishing to have her names
put forward to be considered for future Committees should contact the NLWLC to
discuss her interests.
The Commission members look forward to working with our new
leader, Mr. Jim Bennett, and appreciate his interest in advancing women within
the Party.
It is an honour and a pleasure to work with the Executive
Board members of the NLWLC. By working as a team we have great respect for the
contributions each is making to the Commission and the Party. As President, I
represent the Commission on the Executive Board of the LPNL and the National
Women’s Liberal Commission.
We welcome you comments and suggestions.
