Jim Bennett, Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador,
announced today that the Provincial Liberal Caucus will be meeting in
Stephenville on Tuesday, April 18th and Wednesday, April 19th,
to discuss provincial issues, especially those affecting the Bay St. George
region. "Next week’s meeting will provide our caucus with the opportunity
to discuss strategy and issues directly affecting Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians," said Mr. Bennett. "We chose Stephenville for this meeting
because of the many issues facing that region of our province. Abitibi
recently shut down their mill, residents are still encountering compensation
problems related to the flood, outmigration is increasing, and service
reductions are having a major impact on the needs of this region, especially
health care. Stephenville is symbolic of the problems that are being
experienced by many communities in this province as a result of this
government’s policies.
"Next week we will be having several meetings with concerned community
groups and individuals. We will also be having a meet and greet on Tuesday
night at the Holiday Inn for individuals who wish to discuss issues with our
caucus. We are hopeful that our meetings will bring new attention to the
problems being faced in the Bay St. George region.
"I look forward to productive meetings next week. It is important that
our caucus visit communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and hear
the concerns of residents first hand. Over the coming months, I look forward
to other meetings in every region of the province."
