Foote supports decision of FPI employees

December 21, 2006

The MHA for the District of Grand Bank, Judy Foote, supports the employees of Fishery Products International (FPI) in their decision to vote against the latest proposal from the company which included a rollback in wages of $2 an hour.

"The overwhelming support the union received from the membership in its recommendation to reject such an unfair proposal tells a story," said Ms. Foote. "It is a story of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who refuse to be taken for granted whether it is by an international company or the premier of our province who had earlier advised the workers of FPI to accept the company’s offer. Unfortunately the premier’s actions were all FPI needed to continue to treat its employees in such a callous manner. If cutting an employee’s wages was acceptable to the premier, why would the powers at FPI think any differently?

"This was yet another example where the premier should have considered the consequences of his actions before doing what he did and causing hardship for people who have worked for years under less than ideal conditions to provide a living for their families. These are not individuals who operate out of luxurious board rooms making decisions that affect the lives of others. Why is it that an international company like FPI, and in this case the premier of our province, don’t seem to realize, or refuse to acknowledge, that wealth is generated by those who work for them?

"FPI’s actions, and in this case words, tell the story. The company has said it is making more profit with their ground fish plants shut down. Once again such statements show exactly that FPI is all about making money at the expense of those who helped to build the company. The fact that FPI has also said that in addition to reaching an agreement with their employees before they reopen the plants that are closed, government will have to scrap the FPI Act, shows that they are not only treating their employees with contempt, but the government as well. Instead of supporting FPI and its callous attitude towards this province, the premier should be standing up to FPI. Why is it the premier will take a hard line with other corporations and individuals, but let FPI treat us with such contempt?"
