Joyce cautions drivers about snow
clearing over Christmas holidays
December 22, 2006
Eddie Joyce, Opposition Transportation and Works Critic and MHA for the
District of Bay of Islands, is warning drivers to take caution over the
Christmas season, especially between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am when snow
clearing equipment is removed from the province’s highways.
"I encourage drivers to be especially careful over the Christmas season,"
said Mr. Joyce. "While many people will be visiting family and friends, drivers
must take caution to remember that the Department of Transportation and Works
remove their snow clearing equipment from the highways after 10:00pm. During
these hours, driving conditions can become very dangerous during inclement
weather as road conditions deteriorate.
"I have already received complaints from several people who have been stuck
on the province’s highways because of a lack of snow clearing. This has become
an increasing concern for many people and I encourage government to re-evaluate
their priorities as it relates to this issue. Safety on our highways should be
more important than saving a few dollars.
"This Christmas, Minister John Hickey should consider giving all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians an early present. I suggest he make the
necessary investment, change his department’s snow clearing policy and ensure
that our highways are maintained and kept safe 24 hours a day."
