Yvonne Jones, Opposition Health Critic and MHA for the District of
Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, is welcoming yesterday’s announcement of a
dialysis unit for Happy Valley-Goose Bay, but is calling upon government to
establish similar units in St. Anthony and the Burin Peninsula, areas that
also require the service. "I was very pleased that government listened to
the concerns that have been expressed by the people of Labrador regarding
access to dialysis services," said Ms. Jones. "Now that it appears
government has recognized the need that exists for these services in our
province, I am calling upon Minister Ottenheimer to help the people in St.
Anthony and the Burin Peninsula.
"I have recently written the minister to express my support for
establishing dialysis units in these areas of the province. After the death
of a friend in St. Anthony, I understand how important it is to have these
services available in these regions. Both St. Anthony and Burin need these
services. The nearest dialysis unit for each of these areas is hours away. I
understand that government has a policy as to how many patients are required
for a machine, but similar to the circumstance in Happy Valley-Goose Bay,
exceptions must be made to reflect the needs of the people in all regions of
the province.
"For many people who require dialysis treatment, traveling to obtain the
service is extremely stressful. Some people living in St. Anthony and the
Burin Peninsula are considering whether they can remain in their
communities, or feel obligated to move closer to the service. I applaud
government’s decision to place a machine in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, but
something must also be done to help people in other areas requiring the same
service."
