Opposition seeks update on Provincial Immigration Strategy

January 26, 2006

Roland Butler, Opposition Critic for Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for the District of Port De Grave, is asking the provincial government to give an update on the development of the Province’s Immigration Policy.

"The provincial government released a discussion paper in June 2005 and held a number of closed door consultation meetings around the province in September and October," said Mr. Butler. "Government indicated in the discussion paper that implementation of the "What We Heard" consultation document would commence in early 2006.In light of the ongoing immigration issues being discussed in the province, I am asking the minister to provide an update on the status of this process.

"This government does not have a very good record of listening to people, fostering good public debate or implementing recommendations. In many cases they try to give the impression that they are consulting, but do not follow through on the process. Rather than hide away and avoid making decisions on a politically sensitive issue, government should be promoting public discussion. Now is the time to become active on this file while several claimants are currently in sanctuary in churches around the province.

"It is important that we have a full and open public policy discussion on the direction our provincial immigration policy should take. Government should release their draft strategy and seek further input. With the recent change in government at the federal level, now is the time for our provincial position be clear on this issue."
