Reid challenges government to release
Department of Finances analysis into fibre-optic deal
November 28,
2006
Opposition Leader Gerry Reid is
challenging government to release an analysis conducted by the Department of
Finance earlier this year into the fibre-optic deal. The Opposition has been
advised that this internal review does not reflect positively on government=s
$15 million investment into the fibre-optic project.
AWe
have learned that the Department of Finance conducted an internal analysis of
the fibre-optic deal,@
said Mr. Reid.
ADuring
this whole debate, there has been no reference or mention by government
of this internal analysis. From our discussions, we have been
advised that this report does not paint a very positive picture of government=s
fibre-optic investment.
AIf
there is nothing to hide and the results of this analysis are favourable, I
challenge Minister Sullivan and Minister Taylor to make this public. One of the
criticisms of this deal is that information remains secretive. An internal
government report that discusses this deal should be released publicly so
everyone can scrutinize what Department of Finance officials thought of the
province=s
$15 million investment.@
Reid says he continues to be concerned
about government=s
refusal to allow all related documentation to be released on this deal.
AIf
this deal is so squeaky clean, why is a simple internal government analysis
being hidden from the public? I would suggest that this report has been buried
because it did not provide the spin that government wanted on this project.
AUntil
the entire truth comes forward about this deal, and further information is
forthcoming from government, we will continue to ask questions regarding this
deal each day in the House of Assembly. In the meantime, our office will be
submitting an Access to Information request for this analysis. Unfortunately, I
fully expect government to either delay the release of this document until next
year, or will refuse to release it altogether.@
