Labrador minister's behaviour unacceptable

 charges Jones

November 29, 2006

The Liberal Opposition Critic for Labrador Affairs and the MHA for the District of Cartwright L=Anse au Clair, Yvonne Jones, charges that  Transportation Minister John Hickey, who is also responsible for Labrador Affairs, has shown conduct that is not appropriate for a minister of the crown.

The Liberal MHA questioned the minister in the House of Assembly for several days on issues relating to the Trans Labrador Highway.  On both occasions the minister provided misleading and inaccurate information to the Legislature and to the public.   The minister was asked on two consecutive days by Jones to withdraw his erroneous statements on one of these issues, relating to government=s charges that funds were  redirected out of the Trans Labrador funding agreement by the previous Liberal administration.

AThe minister showed just how undependable he really is, first by stating something that was totally false and secondly, by refusing to stand and apologize for making that falsehood,@ says Jones. AThe minister is quite aware that he has contradicted his own document when he claims that funds were used for purposes other than what they were intended.  He showed his true face in the House of Assembly this past few days and hopefully, people will see that his conduct and unfounded accusations are unworthy of both a public official and a government minister.@

The transportation minister was also questioned by the Opposition MHA in the House of Assembly on whether a deal had been signed with the federal government to cost-share completion of the TLH.  The minister indicated in his response yesterday that negotiations were still ongoing.  Yet, he was quoted in the media by Nick McGrath as boasting that an inked deal was on his desk.  AWas there a deal, or was there not a deal?@

According to reports from the House of Commons, the federal government has not signed off on a deal.    Instead, they are still waiting for Minister Hickey to get the ball rolling and submit a proposal for the funds.
