Opposition Leader Gerry Reid today congratulated New Democratic Party (NDP)
Leader Lorraine Michael on her by-election victory last night against PC
Candidate Jerome Kennedy, and the entire Danny Williams election team. "I
am very pleased that Lorraine Michael and the NDP will remain present in the
House of Assembly," said Mr. Reid. "It is obvious that the premier’s
popularity will not carry every candidate through another election. With a
strong campaign team and strong candidates, the premier can fully expect a
district by district battle as we prepare for the election in 2007.
"It is obvious that the premier is disgruntled with the fact that we did
not run a candidate in this by-election. I question why he is so upset? He
only had to face one candidate, instead of two, and he lost. He should take
his lumps and instead of lashing out at the Liberal Party, he should take
the message from this by-election that not everyone approves of his approach
to governing. However, this is typical of the premier’s approach, if he
loses he gets sooky, lashes out and places the blame on someone else.
"I look forward to working with Ms. Michael in the coming months. I am
certain she will do a great job on behalf of the people of Signal Hill-Quidi
Vidi, and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."
