Many questions arising

regarding new fibre optic deal

November 6, 2006

Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says he has received many e-mails and calls from various sources related to the announced deal last week between the provincial government and a consortium of companies that includes Persona Communications and Rogers.

Last week, government announced $15 million of taxpayers money for a new fibre optic cable across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The remainder of the balance will be picked up by Persona Communications, Rogers and MTS Allstream.

AOur office has received much information from concerned citizens  regarding this new fibre optic deal signed last week,@ said Mr. Reid. AFrom what we are being advised, there is much more to this deal than meets the eye. Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to research and review some of the information regarding this initiative and investigate any potential conflicts of interest that may exist between the premier and his former business interests.

AWhile initial reaction from the business community has been positive, there are many questions that need to be asked and investigated. For the many people in the province who are concerned this is not being challenged by the Opposition, we will certainly be asking  questions related to this initiative when the House of Assembly opens in two weeks.@
