Opposition reiterates call for ministers

to also step aside
July 10, 2007

Liberal Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says   George Tilley=s resignation as president and CEO of Eastern Health is another indication government continues to use scapegoats rather than taking responsibility for its own leadership failures in the handling of  flawed breast cancer test results.

Tilley=s resignation came after months of controversy over the way inaccurate test results were dealt with by key health authorities. While the Opposition called for Tilley=s resignation during the spring session of the House of Assembly, no explanation was provided for his departure this week.  Earlier this year, government announced that the deputy minister of health John Abbott would be also be replaced as a review of the health-care system was carried out.

AWe have two individuals involved in the decision not to release the full test results, but two other key players, both the current Minister of Health Ross Wiseman and the former Minister of Health, Tom Osbourne, are still sitting in cabinet and that is not acceptable,@ says Reid.  AThose two cabinet ministers were ultimately responsible for the health care system in our province and they have not been morally responsible to the people of the province in their respective roles. It is time they too stepped aside so that the Chief Justice can do a thorough investigation during her inquiry.@

Reid says that the two ministers were privy to information about the flawed breast tests results and weighed litigation costs against publicly disclosing such critical information.  AWhen  ministers of the crown place money concerns before those of health concerns and the need for the public to be better informed, then they have committed a grave injustice and have breached the trust of the people.@

AYou can=t have both the Deputy Minister of Health and the CEO of Eastern Health resign and leave those ministers, who were ultimately responsible, sitting in cabinet. To restore public confidence in our health care system, both ministers Osbourne and Wiseman should be removed from cabinet until after the inquiry is complete.@
