MHA Jones pushes for Red Bay to Lodge Bay

road work to be tendered
July 19, 2007

Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L=Anse Au Clair, is urging the Department of Transportation and Works to immediately tender the road work that has been promised for  Red Bay to Lodge Bay to help improve driving conditions between those two communities.

Earlier this year, government committed $1.45 million for road and bridge work in the district, including the stretch from the communities of Red Bay to Lodge Bay.  Government has yet to announce any tendering relating to this road work.

AThat road is in a deplorable condition with all the gravel topping having eroded and people are literally driving on the bedrock,@ says Jones. AThis would not be acceptable anywhere else in the province and it should not have been allowed to deteriorate to such a state.@

Jones points out that using this roadway not only creates an inconvenience and a safety factor to local residents, but it also deters tourists from the two communities which leads to further economic hardship for the area. AThere are only a few months of the year to take advantage of the tourist season and yet government has not seen fit to ensure that this road is at least maintained to a decent level.

The Liberal MHA also points out that access to goods and services outside those communities are also hampered by the terrible condition of the road. AThe delivery of goods and services into the community is also negatively affected.   So, having poorly maintained roads does not just concern driving but affects other industries and services as well.

AI call upon the department to immediately tender this contract. I fear that by waiting until late in the fall, when the snow is on the ground,  will further delay the repair of this road.  Government continues to insist that improving the transportation network throughout the province is a top priority, so I urge the minister to stand by his word and get this road project started as soon as possible.@
