Parsons still calling on government to
publicly release Terms of Reference for judicial inquiry
July 3, 2007
Kelvin Parsons, Opposition Justice Critic and MHA for the District
Burgeo-Lapoile, says he is pleased that Madame Justice Margaret Cameron has
commenced her judicial inquiry into the faulty estrogen and progesterone
receptor testing in breast cancer patients, however, he is calling on government
to publicly release the Terms of Reference for the inquiry.
"During this past session of the House of Assembly, I asked government to
publicly release the Terms of Reference for this judicial inquiry," said Mr.
Parsons. "Madame Justice Cameron has now started her review, yet government has
not released the guiding principles that will govern this investigation. Part of
the reason we are having this inquiry today is because of government’s lack of
openness and transparency during this entire process. Unfortunately, it appears
government hasn’t learned this lesson and still insists on keeping important
details from the people of the province.
"There are many aspects of this investigation that need to be clearly
analyzed, including who knew what and when. The Opposition parties have already
been refused input into the Terms of Reference and I would hope this is not a
deliberate attempt by government to narrow the scope of this investigation. The
only way to get to the bottom of this unfortunate circumstance and ensure that
this type of false testing never happens again is to have everything out in the
open. I hope government realizes this fact and decides to release the Terms of
Reference immediately."
