Parsons calls for immediate brush cutting
program on the Burgeo Highway
July 4, 2007
Kelvin Parsons, MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile, is calling on
government to immediately commence a brush cutting program on the Burgeo Highway
(Route 480) before someone is seriously injured or killed because of heavy brush
alongside the road.
"Heavy brush on Route 480 is a serious safety concern," said Mr. Parsons.
"The people of Burgeo are circulating a petition to have this issue addressed,
but have yet to hear from the Minister of Transportation and Works. I have
recently written a letter to the minister asking for this issue to be addressed,
but I fear someone will have to be seriously injured or killed before this
government acts. This is completely unacceptable."
Parsons pointed out that this government has developed a pattern of only
acting to address issues when pressured to do so. Government only asked the
Auditor General to investigate the fibre-optic deal after pressured to do so by
the Opposition; launch a judicial inquiry into faulty breast cancer testing
after pressure by the Opposition and general public; address the serious
shortage of washroom facilities for the Burgeo-Ramea ferry after being pressured
by the Opposition; and most recently revamp the new salmon licence requirements
after being challenged by the Opposition.
"It is unfortunate that this government is not willing to take the initiative
and address serious issues when they arise. Overgrowth of brush alongside the
Burgeo Highway has been singled out as the main contributing factor in past
accidents on Route 480 and immediate action is needed to prevent any further
incidents. The current dangers faced by motorists are unacceptable and must be
addressed by government before someone is seriously injured or killed. Any
further delay is only inviting a tragedy to occur."
