Sweeney pleased that tenders to be called
on Victoria water and sewer work

George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear-Harbour Grace, is pleased
that tenders will soon be called for the replacement of the lagoon in Victoria
after a four year delay of the project by the present administration. The
lagoon, which was built to help contain sewage, has surpassed its life
expectancy and was a source of continual problems for the area.
"Recently, the Mayor of Victoria, Art Burke, along with officials from the
town and myself as MHA met with government officials to reinforce the importance
of this project and to press government for a resolution to this issue," said
Mr. Sweeney. "I am pleased that government will finally be moving forward with
the call for tenders and I am hopeful that this will solve the environmental and
potential health problem in the area.
"Money for this project had been approved by the previous Liberal
administration in 2003, but was put on hold and delayed after the Williams
government came to power. Raw sewage has spilled from this lagoon for too long
and it was obvious to everyone that this situation had to be addressed."
The Liberal MHA says he hopes this is not just another pre-election ploy by
the government and he intends to be watching the process very closely to make
sure nothing changes. "I want to see this tender called, awarded and
construction begin before the election."
Sweeney says he will continue to work with the communities in the district he
represents to ensure they receive their fair share of funds from government.
