Jones wants community roads upgraded

June 15, 2007

Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L=Anse au Clair, pushed Transportation and Works Minister John Hickey to upgrade roads in the communities of Williams Harbour, Norman Bay and Black Tickle this week in the House of Assembly.

AThese communities are not connected to the Trans Labrador Highway, but they do have local gravel roads in their communities that are in a deplorable condition,@ said Ms. Jones. AIn many cases, there is no crushed stone left on the roads and they have eroded to the bedrock making for very dangerous driving conditions.@

The Liberal MHA says she is pleased that the minister has given her an undertaking to look at the possibility of upgrading these roads this summer. AOver the past four years, this government has not spent a cent to upgrade the roads in these communities. Even though I had indicated this to be a priority for road work in my district again this year, government once again ignored these recommendations.

AI am hoping that the minister will recognize the need which exists in these communities and see that this work is done. If not, I intend to keep up the pressure until government does the right thing and completes the road work in these communities.@
