Premier's lack of participation in FPI
debate disappointing
June 13, 2007
Kelvin Parsons, Opposition House Leader and MHA for the District of
Burgeo-Lapoile, says the premier’s refusal to participate in the debate to scrap
the Fishery Products International (FPI) Act is very disappointing, especially
in view of the importance of the legislation.
Yesterday, government voted to repeal the FPI Act in the House of Assembly.
Once proclaimed by government, this legislation will mean that the people of the
province will no longer have any control over the actions of that company, or
FPI’s assets that were purchased with the hard work and commitment of the people
of Newfoundland and Labrador.
"I was very surprised and disappointed that Premier Williams did not speak to
the piece of legislation that killed the FPI Act," said Mr. Parsons. "While the
premier voted to repeal this Act, he did not sit through the debate, nor did he
speak to the motion. This is the same individual who stated during the FPI
Income Trust debate that he could not support that legislation because it had
too many loopholes. This legislation has even more loopholes, yet he refused to
even participate in such an important discussion.
"We all know the premier has little interest in the fishery, however, it is
very frustrating to see him support such a resource giveaway and not say a word.
I think this inaction is shameful, especially when so many people are impacted.
I fear the decision to scrap the FPI Act and government’s support for the
piecemeal sale of the company will become one of the biggest regrets of the
premier. It is truly unfortunate that he did not voice his opinions when he had
the chance."
