Barrett denounces decision not to build
new school in Terrenceville
June 14, 2007
Percy Barrett, MHA for the District of Bellevue, is very disappointed that
Education Minister Joan Burke confirmed today that no new school will be built
in Terrenceville. Barrett questioned the minister during Question Period in the
House of Assembly earlier today.
"The people of Terrenceville, Grand Le Pierre and English Harbour East were
promised a new K-12 school in Terrenceville as part of the regional
restructuring of the board," said Mr. Barrett. "After listening to the
minister’s response this afternoon, it certainly appears government will not
commit funding for a new facility in our region.
"The Eastern School District (ESD) had slated Terrenceville as the number one
priority on their new school construction priority list. Torbay was the second
ranked priority, but they have already received word that they will be getting a
new school, while the people in our region have been left out again. Even though
the school in Terrenceville is in poor shape and must be replaced, the minister
seems more interested in playing politics than addressing these legitimate
concerns.
"This is another slap in the face to parents and students from these three
communities. Students in Grand Le Pierre and English Harbour East were promised
a new school in Terrenceville to replace their existing schools. Unfortunately,
these students will now face a much longer commute and will be forced to enter a
learning environment that requires significant infrastructure upgrades. This is
totally unacceptable and certainly not what was promised to these people."
