Andersen renews call for Labrador services
December 11, 2003

Torngat Mountains MHA and Labrador Affairs critic Wally Andersen is calling on the conservative government to build the Happy Valley-Goose Bay auditorium and reinstate the air subsidy for food.

"The conservative government has been in office for over a month and we have not been given any indication of the status of this auditorium," said Andersen. "The Liberal government had pledged to construct a new facility to serve the performing arts community in Labrador.

To allow the project to proceed, the government must contribute $2.4 million towards the cost of a new 350-seat auditorium for Happy Valley-Goose Bay. I call immediately for Mr. Williams to play Santa, not Scrooge and announce a renewed commitment to this project before the students finish school."

The MHA is also concerned that Christmas is upon us and there has been no announcement concerning an air subsidy for transporting food.

"This program has been in place in the past and is much needed at this time of year. Perishable items such as milk and eggs are not affordable without this subsidy. These items are a necessity, especially for children. I call on the Minister responsible for Labrador Affairs to immediately reinstate the air lift subsidy so that much needed food can be transported to the Labrador Coast at reasonable cost.

"During the election campaign, the PC Party pledged to make a renewed commitment to Labrador and it is at this time these commitments should be upheld."
