Andersen says immediate action required on food air subsidy
December 16, 2003

Torngat Mountains MHA and Labrador Affairs critic Wally Andersen is again calling on the conservative government to continue to provide money to subsidize the cost of transporting fresh food by air to the north coast of Labrador.

"The current cost of eggs, milk, fresh vegetables and other perishable items on the north coast is not manageable," said Andersen. "To purchase milk in Postville it costs $6.25 compared to an approximate cost of just $3.00 in St. John’s. Almost staggering is the cost of transporting vegetables without subsidy. The shipping costs alone to bring a 50 lb sack of potatoes or turnip from Goose Bay to Postville is $27.

"The residents of coastal Labrador incur the highest expenses for heating oil, food, gasoline and electricity, yet they are among the lowest wage earners in the province. It is time for the government to immediately act by committing towards an air subsidy for fresh food and vegetables the way that funds have been available in past years. We are not asking for perks, these items are a necessity for our health and welfare.

"This morning, I made a personal plea to the premier to find the money to ensure fresh food makes it to the north coast of Labrador while the government decides what permanent solution can be found. I am willing to work with the government to find a permanent solution, but a short term commitment is essential at this time."
