Sweeney writes health minister concerning dialysis
December 4, 2003

George Sweeney, MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace district, wants the conservative government to guarantee that the renal dialysis unit announced for Carbonear last summer will go ahead as scheduled.

"I have written the new Minister of Health and Community Services asking her to reaffirm the commitment of the previous administration," stated Sweeney. "This week there has been speculation that all departmental spending has been put on hold awaiting an external review of the province’s finances.

"Residents of Conception Bay North who require dialysis can attest to the need for this service at the Carbonear Hospital. A drive to St. John’s for a five hour treatment several times a week is a hindrance on a persons quality of life.

"As the chairperson of the Trinity-Conception Region Health Care Board from 1989-1995 and as MHA, I have worked with the residents of Conception Bay North to ensure their concerns have been heard. A recent study which evaluated the level of need in specific areas identified Carbonear Hospital as a necessary site for renal dialysis. I was pleased last summer to be part of an announcement which will allow these people to receive the treatment they need.

"I trust that the new minister will also realize the need in the Conception Bay North area and await her response to this concern."
