Health critic wants flu plan put in place
December 5, 2003

Opposition health and community services critic, Yvonne Jones, wants to know if the provincial health minister has put in place any new plan to deal with the implications of a possible serious flu season. A plan has already been discussed in other provinces and at the national level.

The question from the opposition critic comes following reports in the national media and predictions from experts that North America could face a very serious flu season this year with the emergence of new, more serious viruses.

"I understand that a new pandemic influenza plan is being finalized at the national level and I want to be sure that provisions are being taken in this province to prepare for what some experts are predicting could become a serious problem over the next year or two. For example, should we have a public awareness campaign encouraging people to get flu shots? Do we have adequate supplies of antiviral drugs in this province? What plans have been put in place to prevent influenza from striking hospitals, nursing homes and home care facilities?"

The Liberal MHA says she does not want to raise unnecessary fear, but this issue has been discussed in the national media and the minister should tell people what safeguards are being put in place in this province.
