Parsons seeks update on Coast Guard situation
December 9, 2003

Kelvin Parsons, MHA for Burgeo-La Poile, is asking Fisheries and Aquiculture Minister Trevor Taylor and Premier Danny Williams what representation has been made to the federal government in relation to the future of five Coast Guard Communications and Traffic stations in the province.

"These offices represent a significant presence in these locations and provide valuable services to marine traffic and as a province, we should be making our case to the Federal Government," said Parsons. "The station in Port aux Basques handles all traffic flowing in and out of the gulf of St. Lawrence, a busy international waterway. It is essential that these stations remain in the communities where they can provide the best service.

The Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has confirmed that a review of centres is underway across the country.

"I want the Minister to let us know what actions he or the conservative government have taken to prevent the closure or relocation of these stations. I ask him to release any reports or letters that have been sent at this point to make the position of this province clear."

The Coast Guard stations are located in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, St. Anthony, Port aux Basques, Placentia and St. John’s.
