Roland Butler, opposition Human Resources and Employment
critic and MHA for Port de Grave, is concerned with the level of child
poverty in this province. In his first official function as critic, Butler
will attend an event to be held tomorrow on child poverty by the Community
Services Council in St. John’s.
"Throughout my lifetime I have spent a great deal
of time and effort on helping those who are less fortunate in our
society," said Mr. Butler. "I believe that it is important to
continue to focus on these issues by attending events such as the one being
held tomorrow.
"With a child poverty rate that is the highest in
the country, we must all work together in an effort to improve the quality
and standard of living that our youngest and most vulnerable must face on a
daily basis. It is shameful that in 2003 there are families and children who
are unable to achieve a standard of living that most people take for
granted."
Mr. Butler stated that he is very interested in
listening to the specific topics including poverty in rural areas, a
discussion that is of great importance to his home constituency of Port de
Grave.
"I look forward to listening to the panel of
community leaders at the MacMorran Community Centre tomorrow morning and
share my personal experiences while learning from others. I am hopeful that
this event will bring heightened attention to this important issue in our
province." |
