Percy Barrett, MHA for the District of Bellevue, asked
questions in the House of Assembly yesterday about the way residents of Old
Mill Road in the community of Goobies are being treated as a result of a
change in policy announced in the budget earlier this year.
"A mistake has clearly been made here and it is in the
power of the Minister to rectify this situation if he chooses to do so,"
said Barrett. "We are talking about a road with 16 families who have
invested thousands of dollars in their homes with the belief that their road
would continue to be maintained as it was in the past. Now they have found
out, due to some arbitrary cost savings measure introduced by this
government that the road they live on will not be maintained and the snow
will not be cleared. This is clearly unreasonable and I intend to keep up
the fight to have this issue addressed."
The government announced in the budget this year that
they would not be maintaining or clearing snow from cabin roads. As part of
this policy, the department incorrectly included Old Mill Road in Goobies as
a seasonal road. The Minister has told the residents they will have to form
an association or corporation to collect fees to clear and maintain the road
they live on. In the House of Assembly, Barrett asked why no other local
service district in this province is expected to do this and why there is a
double standard for Old Mill Road.
"Why is this road not being maintained as the other
two roads in Goobies are? Furthermore why is it not being maintained in the
same way as roads in the other 184 local service districts?"
"I think it is time for the Premier to get involved in
this issue. It seems to me that the Minister has made a mistake and now does
not want to admit it. The only way to clarify this situation is for the
Premier to get involved." |
