Jones says Lawrence O'Brien was a true Labradorian
December 17, 2004

Yvonne Jones, MHA for the District of Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair, was saddened to learn of the passing of Labrador MP Lawrence O’Brien and expressed her condolences to his family.

"Today, Labrador has lost one of its native sons and strongest pillars," said Ms. Jones. "The people of Labrador are saddened with the loss of one of their strongest representatives.

"Lawrence O’Brien always put Labrador issues first and foremost. He undertook the job of MP with the promise that he would be a strong proponent of Labrador and represent the unique issues that face our region. He fulfilled this promise with great force. As result of his efforts, Labrador is a better place and his valuable contribution will not be forgotten.

"Lawrence was always known as a fighter. He stood up to all levels of government to ensure Labrador’s voice was heard. Whether it was funding for the Trans Labrador Highway, Defense spending or aboriginal issues, he would take the fight directly to the corridors of parliament. He was an individual who never held anything back and spoke his mind, however, he never held a grudge and never beared malice against anyone who disagreed with him on an issue.

"Every community in Labrador has a legacy that they can hold up with pride and remember the work of Lawrence. All Labradorians respected his work and contribution to improving the social and economic conditions in our region.

"It is truly a sad day for the people of Labrador. I am calling on all Labradorians to fly the Labrador flag at half mast today as a sign of respect, and to demonstrate their appreciation for the hard work and effective representation that Lawrence provided over the past eight years. He will not be forgotten."
