Snowmobile legislation needs more examination says Barrett

Encourages people to express opinions to their MHA
December 6, 2004

Opposition MHA Percy Barrett is upset with the lack of public consultation on a piece of legislation that is before the House of Assembly concerning new regulations governing snowmobile use in the province.

"The Minister only put this legislation before the House of Assembly this week and he is trying to ram it through before the people of this province have a chance to focus on it and express their opinions," said Barrett. "I get the sense that the people of this province want to examine the implications more closely before this is passed.

"I want to encourage all members of the public who have an interest in this issue to call their MHA and express their opinion or ask questions. This kind of legislation should have involved some public consultation process or at least a period of time when people could examine the new rules."

The Liberal MHA says he is not sure if the short notice on this legislation is a deliberate attempt to limit debate or if it is just an oversight from a new inexperienced Minister. "In the House of Assembly this week several Liberal MHAs delayed passage of the bill and asked questions that the Minister was unable to answer. In this case, the government is not following through with their promise to be open and accountable."
