Langdon continues fight for future of Harbour Breton

Asks questions and has private members motion debated
November 24th, 2004

Oliver Langdon, MHA for the District of Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune, continued to press government in the House of Assembly today to take action on the planned closure of the FPI plant in Harbour Breton.

"I intend to keep up the pressure on the government to get directly involved with this issue. It is not good enough for them to sit by and allow this plant to close and the town to die," says Langdon.

In question period, the Liberal MHA asked questions related to the possibility that the quota for the plant should remain in the community. Langdon also read back a commitment which Fisheries Minister Trevor Taylor made to the people of Harbour Breton while he was in opposition.

"I reminded the minister of the commitment he made in 2002. He committed that his party would only accept layoffs if the union and the employer mutually agreed. I asked him if he was going to keep that commitment now that he is the minister."

Langdon also asked if the government has any plan to deal with the immediate needs of the approximately 200 of the total 400 workers at the plant who will see their EI run out in a matter of weeks.

After question period, the House of Assembly spent all day debating a private members motion on the issue put forward by Langdon. "I am pleased with the level of support this motion received and I hope it serves to keep the pressure on government and eventually get them more active in finding a solution on this issue."
