Judy Foote, Opposition Critic for Industry, Trade and
Rural Development and MHA for the District of Grand Bank, says that she is
disappointed that government has turned its back on the people of
Stephenville and abandoned the regional airport in the community. Under
questioning in the House of Assembly earlier today, Natural Resources
Minister Ed Byrne stated that "we are not in the airport business" and no
further provincial support will be provided to the airport authority.
"I was very surprised that this government has decided to
no longer provide any support to the Stephenville airport," said Ms. Foote.
"These people were the same individuals who stated during the election that
they would find solutions and stand behind the airport. Today, they have
changed their position and have turned their backs on the people of
southwestern Newfoundland.
"What is even more frustrating was watching Minister
Joan Burke, the MHA for the area, applaud when Minister Byrne made these
statements. Given her response, I question who is representing the people of
her district on this issue. Does she even care that the future of this
airport is in question?
"The Stephenville airport is another piece of
infrastructure that must be maintained if we are to grow the economy of
rural areas. This is another example that demonstrates the haphazard agenda
of this government and the lack of a rural development plan. Airports such
as this are key to encouraging future economic development, and we should be
encouraging their viability, not standing idly by and watching their demise.
"It is unfortunate that other airports such as Gander
are struggling in a similar manner. This government has no plan in place and
has decided to take a hands off approach to dealing with this issue.
Regional airports are very important to the economies of our rural
communities and continues to be a major employer. Today’s statement by
Minister Byrne is disappointing and I am certain it has created more concern
for the people of Stephenville and southwestern Newfoundland." |
