Roland Butler, MHA for the District of Port de Grave and
Opposition Critic for Human Resources, Labour and Employment, says a claim
made in a document recently released by government shows they are intent on
ignoring serious problems facing income support clients in the province.
"I found it shocking to read through the Premier’s one
year report card and see a claim that they have made considerable progress
on improvements in the delivery of income support and employment and career
services," said Butler. "This is a further indication that the Premier and
the Minister just don’t know what is happening in the department or they are
intent on ignoring serious problems.
"There are some very serious problems in terms of
service delivery and several sources have indicated that the policies of the
current government have made things much worse. We recently received a
letter from social workers at the Janeway who confirmed the seriousness of
these problems and the impact they are having on patient care. These front
line employees confirmed there are administrative problems and backlogs in
the system that are causing delays for children who need serious medical
attention.
"I want to know if the Premier has his head in the
sand or if he is deliberately trying to mislead the people of this province
with this kind of statement in his report card? For them to list serious
problems and failures among their accomplishments is really a shock." |
