George Sweeney, MHA for the District of Carbonear -
Harbour Grace, says he is hearing rumblings from the Conservative caucus
that other Cabinet Ministers and MHAs are unhappy with the Premiers
management style and may be thinking about leaving caucus.
"I have heard that several cabinet Ministers are unhappy
with the way decisions are being made, said Sweeney. "For example, Ed Bryne
is unhappy with the way the Premier is interfering in the Lower Churchill
Project and has embarrassed him when due diligence was not done before the
signing of an MOU with a consortium of companies interested in the project
that were later found to be banned from doing business in the United
States."
According to the Liberal Member’s sources within the
Conservative caucus, "The speculation is that Bryne will hang around til the
next federal election and then he will try to run federally. He is currently
preparing to run against current MP Loyola Hearn for the Conservative
nomination in St. John’s South - Mount Pearl."
The Liberal MHA says the instability within the
governing party is serious because this kind of turbulence interferes with
their ability to provide good government. "With the resignation of Elizabeth
Marshall there was significant disruption in the operation of two major
departments as the Premier continues to try and fill the gaps. It will take
these two Ministers months to get up to speed on the issues in their
department and outside groups will need to restate their positions to these
new Ministers on issues. This kind of instability is a real problem not just
for the Premier and the PC party, it is a problem for everyone in the
Province.
"The public sector strike was a very rough period for
a lot of these Members and a lot of them are still not over that yet. Many
of the Members are shaken by the loss of Marshall from Cabinet and the lack
of explanation of what happened. Several members on their side have told me
they will not be running again unless things change. For Cabinet Ministers
and government MHAs to be talking like this so early in the term shows there
are some very serious problems." |
