Kelvin Parsons, Opposition House Leader and MHA for the District of Burgeo &
La Poile, says, now that government has stepped in and acted upon several
recommendations in the Hay Report for Stephenville, it should do the same to
protect services at the Charles R. Legrow Health facility in Port Aux
Basques. Parsons referred to a news release issued this morning by MHAs
Joan Burke and Jim Hodder who announced that government will reject the
recommendations in the Hay Report as they pertain to services currently
offered at the Stephenville hospital. The release indicated that Minister
Burke was making the decision acting in her capacity as the Minister
responsible for the Status of Women.
"The argument put forth by government in the past that these decisions
will only be made after the new health boards have completed consultations
is no longer valid," said Parsons. "I was quite surprised this morning to
hear that this process has been abandoned, the boards will no longer be
making the decisions.
"I cannot understand what process government is using to evaluate the
recommendations, hold public consultations and announce their findings. The
new board chair, Dr. Genge, has been traveling throughout the area with the
understanding his board would be making recommendations related to the
implementation of this report. He was only made aware of today’s Ministerial
intervention by Joan Burke this morning.
"There have been a number of concerns raised by the people of Port Aux
Basques as it relates to service cuts proposed in the Hay Report. Now that
Minister Burke is willing to step in as the Minister responsible for the
Status of Women in her own area, I trust she will also speak for the other
women in the Codroy Valley part of her district and all women in the Channel
Port aux Basques area by seeing that the recommendations in the Hay Report
related to the Charles R. Legrow health facility are also taken off the
table."
