Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says he sympathizes with the plight of the
people from Englee and is calling upon Fisheries Minister Trevor Taylor to
take away Daly Brothers crab license and give it to someone who is willing
to open the plant and provide employment to local residents. The people of
Englee have been lobbying government to take back a crab license from Daly
Brothers. Over the past two years, the company has operated the plant for 15
hours to avoid a policy within the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture
that would permit government to withdraw an inactive license. It appears the
company is content to keep operating in this fashion without re-opening
their plant or providing any substantial benefits to the people of Englee.
"Minister Taylor must withdraw this crab license from Daly Brothers and
give it to someone who is willing to operate the Englee plant in a
functioning manner," said Mr. Reid. "If Daly Brothers is allowed to continue
under the current policy of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the
plant may never open in any prolonged or substantial way. If the minister
continues to hide behind this policy and is unwilling to take back the
license for the community, he will be doing a great disservice to the
residents. I suggest he stand up for the people who are struggling in Englee
and change the policy so this license can be used to help the people in the
area.
"Daly Brothers promised in 2001 that they would rebuild the fish plant in
Englee. They have made other promises over the past couple of years that
would have seen a new investment to upgrade the facility. It now appears
that the company has no intention of making these investments or opening the
plant full time. The company will continue to use the loopholes in this
government policy unless Minister Taylor steps forward to resolve the
situation. If he refuses to act, he is essentially agreeing with the company
and allowing the future of the town to be held for ransom.
"The people of Englee have stated that they will no longer allow product
to be shipped from their community until this situation is rectified. It is
time for this minister to stand up for the workers in the fishing industry
of this province, instead of continuously defending the interests of the
companies."
