Public inquiry into accident should be held

December 12, 2005

Kelvin Parsons, Opposition Justice Critic and MHA for the District of Burgeo-Lapoile, says he agrees with the family of an accident victim on the Argentia Access Road that a public inquiry should be held into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. Parsons raised the issue in the House of Assembly on Monday and is encouraging the Justice Minister to examine this possibility.

Alphonsus Pomroy was killed in an accident on the Argentia Access Road in November. Mr. Pomroy’s family are now calling for a public inquiry to determine the facts surrounding the accident and whether improvements can be made in government’s winter maintenance policies to prevent future accidents from occurring.

"Over the past few weeks, we have questioned Transportation Minister Trevor Taylor regarding the circumstances surrounding this accident," said Mr. Parsons. "Documents that were obtained by the Opposition prove that Minister Taylor misled the public regarding road conditions and the availability of winter maintenance equipment in the area. The family of Alphonsus Pomroy have questions and a public inquiry could help resolve some of these outstanding issues.

"If improvements in our winter maintenance policies can be made, we should take every opportunity to consider these changes. Accidents are very unfortunate and sometimes cannot be prevented, however, government must take every reasonable opportunity to find out where problems exist and whether policy changes are needed.

"I support the Pomroy family in their request for a public inquiry into this accident. Government should seriously consider this request as it may improve winter maintenance policies and lead to safer roads in our province."
