Sweeney wants immediate action to clear roads in Conception Bay North

February 1, 2005

George Sweeney, Opposition Government Services Critic and MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace District, says roads in the Conception Bay North under the responsibility of the Provincial Government are not being kept up to a reasonable standard this winter.

"No snow has fallen in several days, yet the roads have not been cleared to an acceptable standard," said Sweeney. "The Minister of Transportation has a responsibility to the people of this region to provide safe roads and ensure they have been plowed and properly treated with salt and sand. It is not acceptable for highway crews to be taken off the road by 9:30 each evening when conditions are poor.

"I want to know if there have been cutbacks to the number of employees, equipment or sand and salt allocated. The Minister continues to defend his actions since taking office, but as time goes on, the services is getting worse. Today there is still snow and ice on all major roads and it is causing traffic and safety problems for residents in this area.

"I have spoken to people in other areas of the province who have been reporting similar circumstances in their areas. The Trans Canada Highway is not fully clear in many areas and secondary roads to Bonavista, the Burin Peninsula and Conception Bay North are in deplorable condition.

"Given the current conditions, highway crews are not out now applying salt and sand as they should be in these areas. As a first measure, the Minister should send crews back out to correct the current problems and then explain to the public why such deplorable conditions were allowed to remain for such a long period of time following last week’s storms."
