Thistle angered by decision not to fund cancer clinic

March 21, 2005

Anna Thistle, MHA for the District of Grand Falls-Buchans, says Danny Williams and his government should hang their heads in shame for their refusal to fund renovations for the cancer clinic in Grand Falls-Windsor.

"I find it incomprehensible that government fudged the books so they wouldn’t show a surplus, using extra money to pay off the mortgage on The Rooms that hasn’t even opened it’s doors," said Thistle. "Government has taken the $70 million in new health funds from Ottawa, yet they have refused to address the needs of cancer patients who are receiving treatment in an inadequate facility and are allowing this human suffering to continue.

"Cancer patients are required to receive treatment in a small room without any privacy. Many of these patients are quite ill and near the end of their lives. Health professionals have voiced their concerns on this issue to government many times, yet their voices have fallen on deaf ears.

"I cannot understand how Windsor-Springdale MHA Ray Hunter allowed his government to turn it’s back on the people of Grand Falls-Windsor in this way. He should either demand this decision be overturned or tender his resignation immediately.

"I will continue to raise this issue in the House of Assembly and in the media until government finally listens. With $2 billion from Ottawa from the new revenue sharing agreement and additional health care funding to improve patient care, there is no excuse for this lack of compassion. The people of Grand Falls-Windsor deserve much better and their voices will be heard by government until this decision has been reversed."
