Eddie Joyce, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and MHA for the
District of Bay of Islands, says members of the committee have unanimously
agreed to call the CEO of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC), Ms.
Michelle Carinci, to appear before the PAC in early January. The purpose of
the meeting is discuss lottery revenues and gambling impacts in the province
resulting from ALC gaming. The PAC met earlier this month to discuss
lottery addictions, revenues and the decision by government to allow a new
Keno game to be played in Newfoundland and Labrador. Government officials
present at the meeting were not able to provide all requested details. After
ongoing discussion with government members of the committee, it was decided
that Ms. Carinci will be asked to appear before the PAC to provide these
missing details.
"I am pleased that the government members of the PAC decided to support
our request to invite Ms. Carinci to appear before the committee," said Mr.
Joyce. "The issue of gambling and the financial impact it is having on
individuals and families in this province is a very serious issue. While
government is currently developing a prevalence study and an addictions
database, neither is complete at this time. In addition, of the four
Atlantic Provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador is the only province to opt
into the Keno game that will soon be available in most bars and stores
across the province. Nobody seems to know what financial impact this
decision will have on individuals and families in this province. Ms. Carinci
has indicated her intention to attend this meeting and I am hopeful that she
will be able to provide some of these details."
Joyce says he will make public the date of the meeting once it has been
finalized with the ALC and Ms. Carinci. This meeting will be a public
hearing and the media and general public will be welcome to attend.
