Judy Foote, MHA for the District of Grand Bank, says she is very
disappointed that government unanimously stood in the House of Assembly
today and defeated a motion that called for an inquiry into Fishery Products
International (FPI) and to withhold the proclamation of the income trust
bill. "Today’s defeat of our Private Members Motion in the House of
Assembly proves that the vote on the changes to the FPI Act was nothing more
than a sham," said Ms. Foote. "With the growing list of concerns that exist
with FPI and their decision not to follow through on their commitments, the
legislation should not be proclaimed. The members who stood and voted
against this legislation in June, today voted against our motion to put this
proclamation on hold. How could these same individuals vote against
proclaiming this legislation into law?"
In June, Ed Byrne, Jack Byrne, John Hickey, Harry Harding and Bob Ridgley
all voted against changes to the FPI Act. Today, these members stood and
voted against the communities of Harbour Breton, Fortune and Bonavista.
"Today’s Private Members Motion was an opportunity to send a message to
FPI that the people of this province will not be fooled. Unfortunately,
government members did not stand up and support the fishing communities of
this province. Instead, they appear willing to give FPI the green light to
do whatever they like. This is unacceptable and should be challenged.
"We will continue to call for an inquiry into the business activities of
FPI. Once the company completes its internal operational review, it may be
too late for some plants and workers. For a government that claims to be on
top of files, their decision to vote against today’s motion proves they are
not willing to closely monitor the actions of FPI."
