Government must come clean about tire recycling program

November 23, 2005

Opposition Leader Gerry Reid is asking what plans government has to recycle tires in the province. Tires have been stockpiling in areas such as Placentia, Bull Arm and Stephenville without any action plan being released from this government.

In question period today, Minister Tom Osborne confirmed that Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited is no longer interested in burning tires at their mill to create energy. The minister stated that there is one other option being considered, but was not forthcoming with information on that proposal.

"I am very pleased that government and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited listened to the people of Corner Brook ," said Mr. Reid. "I was surprised that the minister would even consider this proposal in light of his comments in 2002 when he was strongly against such a proposal. At that time he linked the burning of tires to health problems such as cancer, asthma and cardiovascular disease.

"It is now necessary for government to reveal the other option they are examining for the recycling of millions of tires that are stockpiling in the province. Minister Osborne has been very secretive about this proposal and seems unwilling to discuss any of the details. Before government announces any finalized plans to recycle these tires, all details should be made public for discussion. If there are any environmental implications, these concerns must be examined. All affected communities should also be consulted and public hearings held if necessary. I hope the minister learned a valuable lesson from the Corner Brook experience. People will not tolerate a proposal that is forced upon them without examining all of the ramifications."
