Joyce wants public consultations and environmental assessment before tires are burned in Corner Brook

November 2, 2005

Eddie Joyce, MHA for the District of Bay of Islands, says before government approves any plan to burn tires at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited, public consultations and an environmental assessment must take place to investigate all environmental repercussions of a tire burning project.

"The citizens of the Corner Brook-Bay of Islands region have many questions and concerns related to the burning of tires at the mill in Corner Brook," said Mr. Joyce. "After listening to the minister address these concerns over the past couple of days, it appears he is willing to approve this project without completing the necessary consultations and due diligence. This is totally unacceptable.

"If this project is environmentally sound, government should have no problem initiating public consultations and requesting that a full environmental assessment be undertaken. It is quite ironic that the minster seems cool to this idea, especially when this type of environmental assessment is used to look at the environmental impacts of everything from snowmobile trails to the establishment of septic systems. It only makes sense to do this same review with a project as substantial as burning tires to generate electricity.

"I am also calling on other local MHAs, Premier Danny Williams and Justice Minister Tom Marshall, to insist on public hearings and a full environmental assessment. I feel it is time that everything regarding this discussion be released publicly and a full debate take place. Many questions are being asked and answers must be provided. Will tires eventually be shipped in from other provinces to be burned? What type of emissions will be released into the air and land environments? What problems have been encountered with similar projects? Questions that have been asked, but no concrete answers have been provided by government.

"I am not for or against this project as I do not have all of the information to be able to make an informed decision. I believe there are many residents that would like the opportunity to express their concerns and have their questions answered before supporting this proposal. I am asking government to provide this information to the people of Corner Brook to ensure they can make an educated and informed decision. "
