Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says he was disappointed to learn today that
the processing licence traditionally held in Englee is no longer with the
community. Reid asked several questions regarding the licence in Englee and
government’s recent request for proposals for a new licence in the Canada
Bay area during today’s question period in the House of Assembly. In the
House of Assembly today and a subsequent media scrum, Minister Rideout
confirmed that there is no longer a processing licence in Englee. In
addition, he confirmed that the Fish Processing Licencing Board is reviewing
proposals for the potential issuance of a licence for the Canada Bay region.
The board may decide to remove the licence from the system entirely or move
the licence to another community in the Canada Bay area. There is no
guarantee that the licence will return to the community of Englee.
"It is unfortunate that the people of Englee have to find out that there
is no longer a processing licence in their community through questioning in
the House of Assembly," said Mr. Reid. "Many people in the Town of Englee
rely on the fish plant for their incomes. After today’s news, there is a
strong possibility that the community will not get their licence back. This
will affect everyone in the community as the uncertainty will cause a ripple
effect through the local economy.
"I am very surprised that Trevor Taylor, the MHA for the area, did not
advise the community that they could be losing their licence. If the Fish
Processing Licencing Board decides to remove the licence entirely or
relocate it to another community, the people of Englee will be left in the
lurch. As their representative in government, and the former Minister of
Fisheries, I am very surprised that Minister Taylor did not advise his
constituents of this decision.
"For a government that claims to be committed to the people of the
northern peninsula, it certainly appears their actions do not support their
words. I hope government will be more inclusive during the rest of this
process and the people of Englee are not left out in the cold when this
decision is finally made."
