Opposition Leader Gerry Reid says while he is pleased with some of the
changes in this afternoon’s Cabinet shuffle, he is disappointed that new
faces were not appointed to the Williams Cabinet. "While I am pleased that
Trevor Taylor was shuffled out of the Fisheries portfolio, I am disappointed
that the Premier did not appoint Roger Fitzgerald to Cabinet," said Mr.
Reid. "This government has created a mess in the fishery over the past two
years and I believe someone respected in the industry, such as Mr.
Fitzgerald, may have helped bring some profile back to fishery issues and
clean up the mess created by the former minister and premier. Unfortunately,
Minister Rideout, an individual who helped create some of the longer-term
problems in the 1980s, is now back into the Fisheries portfolio once again.
"I also believe that Minister Hedderson was shuffled out of the Education
portfolio because of his indiscretions in accepting expensive watches in
Qatar, and his handling of the firing of the former President of the College
of the North Atlantic. I hope he does not make similar mistakes in his new
portfolio of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
"I am also very disappointed that the Premier once again refused to put a
member from Labrador in the Cabinet to represent Labrador issues. This is
once again another slap in the face to the people of Labrador. Instead of
appointing new people with new ideas, the people of the province will have
to suffer through the same lack of initiatives of this government."
