Wally Andersen, Opposition Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Critic and MHA
for the District of Torngat Mountains, is calling on Premier Danny Williams
to move forward with plans to construct an auditorium in Happy Valley-Goose
Bay for the benefit of all children in Labrador. "Government has already
moved forward with a number of other large capital projects around the
province in the past year," said Andersen. "I believe that government should
be committed to this project because it is the right thing to do. Funding
should be immediately allocated to construct the desperately needed
auditorium for the children of Labrador.
"A new facility is needed in this region to provide a performing arts
venue for students all over Labrador. When Goose High School closed several
years ago, the existing facility was closed and government had committed to
building a new $2.4 million auditorium that would have accommodated 350
people. Premier Williams deferred this project two years ago and it is now
time to move forward.
"Other deferred and cancelled projects in Corner Brook, Grand Bank and
Grand Falls-Windsor have now been revived by the current government and
there is no reason why this high priority item for Labrador should continue
to be unaddressed.
"Labrador has many unique cultures and histories and the performing arts
allows us to keep our heritage strong and vibrant. It would be a shame if
our people are denied the opportunity to exercise their creative skills on
stage in a facility that is long overdue. As the Christmas season
approaches, it is time for the Premier to show a commitment to the people of
Labrador by moving forward with construction of the auditorium."
